Crowded is the first artwork in Bridey McGlynn’s continued investigation of her own obsessive observation of herself and her body. In layering multiple images of the figure—different moments of self-perception—she creates a portrait that accurately portrays how she views the body. Fragmented and exaggerated, from both the layering and the many smaller panels making up the larger painting, the portrait weaves in and out of moments of clarity and certainty.

The process of creating Crowded encouraged McGlynn to take the initial steps towards abstraction and immersion in self-portraiture. This work has led her to further explore figurative abstraction, and her most recent work deeply embraces pure color and gesture as a means to capture the human form. Further updates on this developing work can be found on McGlynn’s Instagram, @bmstudioarts.
